This sandstone cross commemorates the men of the 78th Highlanders who died during the Indian Rebellion or Mutiny of 1857-8.
この砂岩の十字架は、1857-8年のインドの反乱で亡くなった第78高地隊の隊員を記念したものです。
HEROES OF LUCKNOW：ラクナウの英雄たち
Indian soldiers rose against British rule and besieged Lucknow in June 1857.
1857年6月、イギリスの支配に反発したインド兵がラクナウを包囲しました。
In September, soldiers of the 78th fought through rebel ranks to relieve the city.
9月には、第78連隊の兵士が反乱軍の中を戦い、ラクナウを救援しました。
The regiment as a whole was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military award for valour.

THE ELEPHANT：象
The 78th gained its elephant badge after the Battle of Assaye, India, in 1803- it is carved on the cross.

Thirty years later, the regiment brought a real elephant back to Edinburgh Castle.
